Data Recovery after System Restore

A System Restore is a feature present in Windows operating system which allows the Windows OS to go back to its factory settings whenever an event such as system malfunctions or failure happens. This is one of the effective methods to fix damaged registry. However sometimes after performing system restore, all personal files, media files and documents goes missing, and users try many ways to recover these missing files.

At first, you must know that a data storage device like hard drive stores data on disk which are managed by partitions. When you add new data into the partition, the data is added to the directory structure and when you restore system, these partitions are restored to the mode when it was backed up; hence the file pointers to those files are disappeared while the data is still on the hard disk.

If you have backup of files you lost then you can retrieve them back by following the below procedure:-

  • Insert your backup disk
  • Run “Control Panel” via Start Menu
  • Choose “System and Maintenance” option
  • Under “Backup and Restore Center” click on “Restore files from backup option and then click on “Restore files””
  • Restore files from your recent backup or from an older backup and click “Next”
  • At last, choose the option to restore all your files

However if you don’t have a backup of the lost files, no need to panic! There are other ways to recover those files back with the help of a data recovery software.

Tips: If there are files lost after system restore, please stop using the hard disk and make sure you do not write any data to the hard disk.
